Getting there

We suggest that competitors stay either in Grasmere, where the races finishes, or in Ambleside, a 15 minute drive from Grasmere and where registration and the safety brief will be held.

Ambleside is easily reached by road, being the hub of the area's road system, 20 miles from the M6 motorway. It is served by several bus services, including National Express. Rail travel is to Windermere, four miles away with easy bus and taxi access. There is a direct Manchester Airport/Windermere rail link.

By Car

The average journey time from London and the south east is about five hours. It takes about one and half hours from Manchester and two hours from York.

The M6 runs to the east of the Lake District National Park:

  • Take Junction 36 and then A590 for the southern end of the Lake District

Even A roads can be quite twisting so allow extra time for your journey and for finding a space in Car parks in high season. 

By air

Manchester is the nearest airpot.

We suggest that competitors book accommodation either in Grasmere near the race finish or in Ambleside. Registration and the safety brief will be held in Ambleside; the bag drop, race finish and post-race party will be in Grasmere.

October is a busy time in the Lake District so accommodation will be in demand. Please book early to avoid disappointment.


Registration will take place between 17:30 and 18:30 on Friday 6th October at the Ambleside Parish Centre, Ambleside. Please ensure you have photo identification, the mandatory equipment and that your wetsuits and trainers are clean and dry. Teams will be issued with their race vests and swim caps during registration.


The Safety Brief will be held at 18:30 on Friday 6th October at the Ambleside Parish Centre, Ambleside. Teams who have not attended the Safety Brief will not be allowed to start.

drop bags

Drop bags can be left at the Dale Lodge Hotel in Grasmere on Saturday 7th October at 07:00am. They will need to be labelled using luggage tags, available at registration. 


Teams will be driven by coach to the race starts. The athlete's coach will depart from Grasmere at 07:20am and Ambleside at 07:45am. The exact pick-up points will be confirmed shortly.

You will need to boarded the coaches five minutes before the departure time to avoid missing the transfer. If you miss the coach there are no alternative arrangements in place - you will miss the race.


We use cut off times to cap the time that each swim stage is open. Otherwise our water safety teams would be out on the water for too long and we'd risk people swimming after dark. Also we want to ensure that our entrants have a suitable level of fitness to safely undertake our courses. Consequently, cut off times will be strictly enforced. If you miss your cut off and continue to race you will be disqualified from this and all future Breca Swimrun events.

There are five aid stations on the Breca Coniston course. The checkpoints are shown on the Course Map, we have listed the locations, distances and cut off times below:

The checkpoints will be stocked with:

- GU gels
- Orange segments
- Bananas (cut in half)
- Water
- Electrolytes
- Boiled new potatoes


The courses are fully marked.
