I am sad to announce that Breca Buttermere 2019 will be the last edition of this iconic race.

Natural England, the government's adviser for the Natural Environment, have made a decision to ban all future events from Buttermere and Crummock Water due to the potential to spread invasive non-native plant species from people swimming.

Whilst I'm sorry to lose an event that is integral to Breca's history and DNA, I fully support all steps to preserve this special place for future generations.

It's been a privilege to race in such an amazing landscape. As Sites of Special Scientific Interest ("SSSIs"), access to the lakes has always been highly regulated, so I'm grateful to the National Trust and Natural England for their support in this and previous years.

I'm grateful too to our athletes for supporting our biosecurity measures. Because of your diligent efforts, we were able to hold this race over five incredible years - thank you.

It's fitting that the last edition of this race will play host to the inaugural Breca UK National Championship. We're going to make it an extra special weekend!

We're not far off selling out the race, so if you're considering signing up I'd recommend doing so soon - it really is your chance! If you're registered already I look forward to seeing you in the hills.

All the best,

Ben
